One of the fascinating things about Rome is that even a casual walk can bring you face to face with artifacts thousands of years old.

In this photograph, nearly two thousand years of history share the same frame. Ancient ruins occupy the foreground, classical Roman columns stand to the right, and a modern glass elevator rises in the background.

The central building is the Museo Centrale del Risorgimento, dedicated to the unification of Italy. Together, these elements illustrate how Rome continues to build upon its past rather than replace it.
