Saint Gregory the Illuminator

St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City

What first caught my attention was the scale. The people seated beneath the statue are easy to miss at first glance, yet they reveal just how enormous the monument really is.

Set high within the wall of St. Peter's Basilica, Saint Gregory appears distant and almost inaccessible. The niche, columns, and surrounding stonework seem designed to elevate the figure beyond ordinary human scale.

Only later did I learn that Gregory the Illuminator is the patron saint of Armenia and is credited with converting Armenia to Christianity in the early fourth century, making it the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion.

The photograph reminded me that throughout the Vatican, architecture is often used not merely to display a figure, but to magnify its significance.
