Crossing the Threshold

This sculpture by Giuliano Vangi is often associated with Pope John Paul II. Standing in the entrance hall of the Vatican Museums, the figure appears to emerge from a block of stone, as if crossing from one world into another. The image reminded me of themes that appeared throughout our visit—doorways, pilgrimage, and transformation.
