Gallery Of Maps

Vatican Museums, Vatican City
May 2026

Moving through the Gallery of Maps, the crowds often merged into a single slow-moving stream. More than once I worried about losing sight of my group, and I found myself watching for the pink ribbon tied to our guide's flag.

The Gallery itself is spectacular. While the painted maps draw the eye, the vaulted ceiling is equally remarkable, covered with intricate decoration that seems to continue without end.

The hallway serves as a passage between other parts of the museum, yet it contains countless details, alcoves, and works of art that reward a slower pace.

Photographs can capture fragments of the space, but not its full scale. Standing beneath the ceiling and looking down the length of the corridor, I realized that some places are simply too large and complex to fit inside a frame.
