Theater Mask

I cannot tell a lie. My first thought was that this sculpture depicted someone having their head chopped off. The expression certainly suggests it.

Only later did I learn that it was a theatrical mask from the classical world. What first appeared gruesome turned out to be a reminder of how dramatic ancient theater must have been.

Even today, the exaggerated features feel instantly recognizable. Thousands of years later, the emotions they were designed to convey still come through clearly.
